Aggarwal lead author in Applied Neuropsychology: Child on concussions

(Feb. 5, 2018) – Seema S. Aggarwal, Ph.D., R.N., an assistant professor in the Department of Graduate Studies, is lead author on an article on recovery times for adolescents who suffer a concussion, which is a growing public health concern.

In a retrospective cohort study of 118 adolescents, ages 13-19, who were evaluated for an acute concussion within 10 days of injury, recovery times were calculated from the date of concussive injury to the date of clearance to return to play and/or normal activities. Researchers found the median time to recovery was 17 days. 

Predictors of longer recovery included the presence of ADHD and prior concussion. Student athletic insurance and public insurance were predictors of shorter recovery times. Student athletic insurance and public health insurance were predictors of shorter recovery times, factors which call for further research.
