C. Paige Owen, Ph.D, MSN, RN, CEN is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Research at Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth. She completed her PhD in 2024 after previously serving as an Instructor in Undergraduate Studies. She has served as an educator since 2013, and has been recognized for outstanding teaching in secondary, clinical, and academic settings and was named a Bronze Medalist for Nursing Education by the Good Samaritan Foundation in 2022.
Dr. Owen began her nursing career in the Emergency Department, later obtaining specialty certifications as a Certified Emergency Nurse and Adult and Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. Her clinical experiences caring for patients afflicted by violent trauma inspired her to examine traumatic stress and its influence on provider wellbeing, burnout, and care delivery. Her dissertation work assessed post-pandemic levels of secondary traumatic stress along with coping and work-related predictors in emergency nurses. In addition, she is an advocate for trauma-informed approaches to care and nursing education and is particularly interested in how trauma-informed education and care impacts patient and provider outcomes. Dr. Owen has presented her research at local, national and international conferences. As a leader in emergency nursing, she has been actively involved in the Emergency Nurses Association since 2007 and serves as a board leader for Houston ENA and reviewer for various books and journal articles relevant to emergency nursing.
Dr. Owen has received numerous awards, including the Healthcare and Nursing Education Foundation (HNEF) Scholarship, Emergency Nurses Association Foundation scholarships, and was one of seventy-five doctoral students nationwide to be named a Jonas Nursing Scholar. She was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International as a graduate student, receiving MSN and PhD Student Awards and the Rising Star Award through the Zeta Pi chapter. She received grant funding from the Texas State Council of ENA for her dissertation research and was awarded the PhD Writing Award and Faculty Award of Excellence by Cizik School of Nursing. Her commitment to improving clinician wellbeing and care delivery to patients impacted by trauma continues to inspire her research and contributions to healthcare and clinical education.
