Susan Alderman

Susan Alderman, PhD, RN, has been a registered nurse since 1987, specializing in acute care and research. She has a Master’s in Nursing Education and her PhD in Nursing with a research focus on cognitive recovery after stroke.  She currently serves as nursing faculty at Cizik School of Nursing and as Clinical Research Director at the Institute for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease, at the McGovern Medical School. She currently serves as a manuscript reviewer for several neurology journals.

She has worked as a nurse researcher for the Department of Neurology, Stroke Team at the McGovern Medical School from 2008 to 2014. Dr. Alderman has worked on various industry and NIH trials, including the first US trial using stem cells to treat acute stroke. She has presented her research at numerous national and international conferences. Her dissertation work received substantial support from the Partner’s Nursing scholarship program. As a NIH StrokeNet trainee/Fellow (2016-2017), she received continued funding for her research in cognitive impairment after acute stroke.

Clinical/Research Focus

Dr. Alderman has focused her research activities on creating and facilitating acute stroke and stroke recovery studies. She manages a team of eleven research staff involved in drug, stem cell, speech and occupational therapy and device studies for the Stroke Institute
