Explore nursing at new summer camp
An inside look at health care careers
Houston-area high school students will learn about nursing careers and earn five health care certifications through the Inspiring and Growing Nursing Interest Through Exploration (IGNITE) NursingTM summer camp at Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston.
More than 90 students have applied for first sessions will take place in July in the Simulation and Clinical Performance Laboratory. Through the camp’s college-level curriculum, students will learn health care skills and participate in high-tech simulations. Each student will receive an individualized action plan and map to a nursing career.
Participants may earn the following health care certifications:
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support
- Stop the Bleed
- HIPAA
- Bloodborne Pathogens
- Medical Ethics
Development of the program was made possible through a generous gift from the HCA Healthcare Foundation Healthier Tomorrow Fund.
The curriculum for the camp is based on the Five E model:
- Engage – Engage students in rigorous skills labs and immersive simulation experiences.
- Explore – Provide opportunities for students to explore professional nursing across the continuum of care.
- Explain – Define professional nursing and how it impacts health care and our communities at-large.
- Elaborate – Provide details on requirements for admission into various nursing degree programs and how to navigate the road to post-secondary education and degree attainment.
- Evaluate – Evaluate student learning and attainment of camp objectives.
