David R Bates, MA, MLIS

Bates is responsible for internal communications – not only within the School of Nursing, but sharing the School's news university-wide. Among other duties for the Dean, he oversees the design, production and effectiveness of its publications as well as news-related sectors of the website and the school’s social media presence. He produces Caring Minds, the School of Nursing ’s annual magazine that celebrates achievements in philanthropy, research, faculty excellence and other areas of interest.

Bates has been a senior program administrator in the public and private sectors, as well as a strategic communications leader, media spokesman, public relations account manager, journalist and freelance writer since 1981. He has won a Bronze Addy Award from the Houston Advertising Federation, the Texas/S.I.R.S. Intellectual Freedom Award for Outstanding Achievement (1991) and the Gold Excalibur Award from the Houston chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. His work is quoted in Morrow's International Dictionary of Contemporary Quotations (William Morrow & Co, c1982), p247.

In March 2016, he shared his expertise in marketing and communications as a speaker during the American Association of Colleges of Nursing-Nursing Advancement Professionals (AACN-NAP) Annual Conference in Washington, DC.

Bates joined UTHealth in August 1999. He holds two master’s degrees (MA and MLIS) from The University of Texas at Austin and graduated with honors from Austin College in Sherman, Tex.
