Dr. Ahn received his BE in Electrical Engineering from the University of Seoul, South Korea, and MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Florida. Then, he received his BS in Nursing, MS in Adult and Elderly Nursing, and PhD in Nursing from the University of Florida. In addition, during his postgraduate training at the UF Clinical and Translational Science Institute, he earned a master’s degree in Clinical and Translational Science. He also earned the Graduate Certificate in Aging and Geriatric Practice at the UF Institute on Aging.

Dr. Ahn’s program of research aims to enhance health and independence in older adults using innovative technologies to optimize pain management. His combined nursing and computer engineering expertise uniquely positions him to address critical gaps in research on pain-related brain mechanisms and to deliver cutting-edge brain stimulation to improve pain and symptom management. He is sought after for his expertise in identifying biopsychosocial determinants that influence pain and disability among older adults and developing innovative pain management interventions and assessments. He has been continuously funded since 2011 as a principal investigator (total > $ 3.5 million) and has produced more than 45 peer-reviewed publications (29 as first author). Currently, he is the principal investigator of an NIH/NINR R15 study (R15NR018050, $463,737, 2019-2022) to test home-based noninvasive brain stimulation to treat chronic pain in older adults and an NIH/NINR R01 study (R01NR019051, $2,410,755, 2020-2025) to test combination therapy with home-based transcranial direct current stimulation and mindfulness-based meditation.

Dr. Ahn has received numerous recognitions and awards, including the Early Science Investigator Award from the Southern Nursing Research Society, Research in Nursing & Health Journal Authorship Award, Interdisciplinary Primer Scholarship Award from the American Pain Society, Gerontological Society of America Minority Issues in Gerontology Committee Award, Health Equity Research Institute Faculty Scholar Award, and Excellence in Scholarship Award from the Sigma Theta Tau Alpha Theta Chapter. Currently, he serves as director of grants for the Southern Nursing Research Society (2020-2022), a permanent member of Spinal Cord Injury/Disorders and Pain Study Section for the Department of Veterans Affairs, and secretary of the Global Korean Nursing Foundation.

Dr. Ahn is nationally certified as an Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP-BC). His areas of expertise are management of late-life health and independence (e.g. pain, neurocognitive symptoms, and psychosocial symptoms), cancer and palliative care, biobehavioral research, non-invasive brain stimulation, quantitative sensory testing, optical neuroimaging, health disparities, big-data analysis, biomedical/nursing informatics, and meta-analysis.
