Dr. Ruppert received her PhD degree in nursing from Texas Woman’s University.  She completed a post-graduate Family Nurse Practitioner program at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.  She is certified as both a Family Nurse Practitioner and an Adult Nurse Practitioner, and has completed an acute care preceptorship.  In addition, she is also recognized as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Medical-Surgical Nursing.

Dr. Ruppert is a Professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Nursing where she Assistant Dean & Department Chair for the Department of Acute & Continuing Care.  She is also Division Head for Advanced Care and Track Director of the Adult/Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program. She has been recognized nationally by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses as a past recipient of the Excellence in Critical Care Education Award.  She is a Fellow in the American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM) in recognition of her leadership and collaborative practice in the critical care field. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP).

In addition to teaching, Dr. Ruppert has held a faculty practice as a nurse practitioner since 1996.  Currently, her practice is in adult medicine at UT Health Services.  She also has had a long practice experience in adult medicine providing primary health care to insured and underserved/ uninsured populations. Her clinical background is a complimentary blend of both acute care and primary care experiences.

Dr. Ruppert has been the Editor-in-Chief of The Internet Journal of Advanced Nursing Practice since 1997.  She received the 1999 Sigma Theta Tau International Information Technology Award for Knowledge Advancement for this publication.  Dr. Ruppert was also the Editor and a contributor of the textbook Critical Care Nursing: Clinical Management through the Nursing Process (2nd edition; F.A. Davis).  She serves as an Editorial Board member and reviewer for numerous journals including Critical Care Nursing Quarterly, AACN Clinical Issues, Heart & Lung, and Critical Care Nurse.  She has published articles in several journals including Nurse Practitioner, The Journal for Nurse Practitioners, Critical Care Nursing Quarterly and American Journal of Critical Care.

Dr. Ruppert has held numerous national leadership positions within professional organizations including Sigma Theta Tau International, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, AACN Certification Corporation, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. In addition, Dr. Ruppert is the Chair of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Content Expert Panel for the Adult Nurse Practitioner certification examination and is a member of the ANCC Appointments Committee. She is on the Board of Commissioners of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), a member of the CCNE Accreditation Review Committee, and a member of the NONPF Curricular Leadership Committee. Dr. Ruppert leads the TEXAS TEAM Gulf Coast Regional Leadership Team.
