Dr. Pickens is an adult and gerontological nurse practitioner who has managed vulnerable adults residing in the community setting, particularly those experiencing abuse, neglect and/or financial exploitation.

Her research interest focuses on executive function and impaired cognition in vulnerable older adults residing in the community setting. In addition to 18 peer-reviewed journal articles, Pickens is principal investigator for a Herzstein and PARTNERS-funded research project on “Assessing Capacity for Self-Care and Protection in Older Adults with Executive Dysfunction Status Post Discharge Home to Prevent Hospital Readmission: A Feasibility Study.”

Pickens obtained her BSN from the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio and her MSN and PhD degrees from the UTHealth School of Nursing. Her PhD focused on executive function in older adults with self-neglect who were vitamin-D deficient.
