Dr. Karen Mellott has extensive experience in critical care and adult health nursing. She has taught staff nurses, undergraduate and graduate students. Her research focus is to improve outcomes of mechanically ventilated critically ill patients and to improve/optimize nurse’s use of technology to interpret and manage patient ventilator asynchrony for improved patient outcomes using inter-professional collaborative interventions.

Mellott received her BS in Nursing from Penn State University, MS in Medical-Surgical Nursing with a Critical Care focus from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Her PhD in Nursing Bio-behavioral- Clinical from Virginia Commonwealth University was supported by a NINR pre-doctoral fellowship. Her research was further funded by a NINR post-doctoral fellowship at University of Pittsburgh before she came to University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
