Dr. Jennifer Beauchamp is an Associate Professor and behavioral scientist at the UTHealth Houston Cizik School of Nursing specializing in psychosocial stressors after stroke. Dr. Beauchamp also serves as the director of the Mental Health Program at the UTHealth Houston Institute for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases. Dr. Beauchamp has received numerous awards for her academic and research efforts, published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international, national, regional, and local meetings. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing which recognizes her academic and research accomplishments disseminating genetic and omics knowledge within the nursing profession. Dr. Beauchamp completed the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke program, which supports her research efforts related to the promotion of neurobehavioral health after stroke. She went on to complete a fellowship at the National Institute of Nursing Research’s Genetics Institute serving as an advocate for global genetic and omics-based nursing education.

Clinical/Research Focus
Dr. Beauchamp has served as a principal investigator and co-investigator on multiple NIH and other funded projects. Her primary research interest focuses on the nature of social behaviors and the development of innovative behavioral interventions for the treatment of symptoms of depression and anxiety, social isolation, and loneliness after stroke. Her work also seeks to explain the underlying basic mechanisms of social connectedness and how these mechanisms affect mental health outcomes and quality of life after stroke. As the director of the Mental Health Program at the UTHealth Houston Institute for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases, Dr. Beauchamp focuses on developing behavioral interventions, support, and therapies for the crucial post-stroke period to address psychosocial stressors in the community-dwelling stroke population. Dr. Beauchamp’s secondary research interest aims to increase stroke awareness in Spanish-speaking Hispanic/Latino populations with limited English proficiency. One of Dr. Beauchamp’s greatest achievements was the creation of RÁPIDO, a culturally-tailored educational tool to raise stroke awareness in Spanish-speaking populations.
