Annalyn S. DeMello, PhD, MPH, RN, CNE, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Research at Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston. With a blended background in public health and clinical care, her interdisciplinary research focuses on the psychosocial and behavioral sequela of firearm injury and rehabilitation among adolescent and young adult survivors. She uses mixed methods designs and incorporates cognitive, behavioral, social, and community factors to understand, disseminate, and implement strategies to improve health outcomes among survivors and strengthen protective community factors to prevent firearm-related harm.
Dr. DeMello is an alumnus of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholars. She has been funded by multiple Sigma International Honor Society of Nursing chapters, the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB)’s Joint Seed Program to Advance Public Health, the Beverly and F.A. Odom Endowment for Nursing, and the Alice Caroline Brown Award for Nursing Research. She has co-authored position statements for the Texas Nurses Association, served as a guest speaker for the Harris Health INSPIRE Symposium, and is published in numerous peer-reviewed research journals. She teaches population health and enjoys mentoring students from nursing, medical, and public health schools. Her skills in research, public health, nursing, and education developed over 16 collective years, as a public health educator, Safe Kids Coalition coordinator, research coordinator, critical care nurse, research nurse, and assistant professor.

Clinical/Research Focus
Dr. DeMello’s research includes hospital-based education to increase safe storage of firearms, patient interviews and longitudinal surveying of adolescents and young adults to identify the psychosocial and behavioral sequelae of firearm injury, large dataset integration, interactive mapping and visual analytics. She is interested in developing, evaluating, and strengthening community relations of hospital-based violence intervention programs.
