Enhancing HIV knowledge for new nurses
Malone-Thomas receives grant to develop course
A new course to be developed and assessed at Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston will give Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students at a deep dive into HIV prevention and management.
Assistant Professor Sheryl Malone-Thomas, DNP, FNP-BC, AACRN, will use a $5,000 award from The University of Texas Shine Academy Small Grant Program to develop and test the one credit-hour independent study course.
“To help end the HIV epidemic, we need to prepare more nurses to provide care to people living with the disease who are advancing in age and those who are vulnerable to HIV acquisition,” Malone-Thomas said.
Students in their last three semesters of nursing school may enroll in the course, which will include online asynchronous curriculum, discussion meetings, journal writing, and 32 hours of hands-on clinical experiences.
Malone-Thomas will assess effectiveness by administering pre- and post-course quizzes to students who complete the course and to a control group of students who did not take it. Up to 12 students may enroll in spring, summer, and fall semesters of 2026 as the feasibility of offering the course long term is being evaluated.
Registration information will be provided later to current BSN students.
