UTHealth Houston scientists can now access low-cost wet lab services from the Cizik Nursing Research Institute’s Biobehavioral Health Biomarker Discovery Service Center.

Housed within Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston, the lab provides a full range of services from specimen sample collection, preservation, and storage to assay development.

“Our lab’s designation as a research service center enables us to provide critical access to sample collection and processing services essential for biomarker discovery to researchers in any of UTHealth Houston’s seven schools,” said Jennifer E.S. Beauchamp, PhD, RN, FAAN, director of the lab and an associate professor at Cizik School of Nursing.

The lab offers subsidized service fees for UTHealth Houston investigators to develop new grant proposals and cost-recovery pricing for funded projects. Phlebotomy, DNA and RNA extractions, multiplex assays, and bioinformatics analysis consultations are among the many services offered.

In addition to Beauchamp, the lab’s leadership includes:

  • Consuelo Walss-Bass, PhD, the lab’s scientific director, a professor in the Louis A. Faillace M.D, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, and director of the Psychiatric Genetics Program and UTHealth Brain Collection for Research in Psychiatric Disorders
  • Bruno Kluwe-Schiavon, PhD, data scientist, a psychologist and researcher at McGovern Medical School
  • Zhiyin (Jane) Yu, BS, research laboratory coordinator
