Speakers at the event, hosted by the White House Office of National AIDs Policy (ONAP), will include Francisco Ruiz, director of the ONAP; Xavier Becerra, the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services; Neera Tanden, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council; and Dr. Angela Hernandez, chief of the HIV Surveillance Branch at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Fernández-Sánchez was chosen to participate because of his research into HIV prevention among migrant communities. He recently received a grant from UTHealth Houston’s Office of Global Initiatives through which he will spend time in migrant shelters in Mexico to conduct in-depth interviews about barriers to HIV prevention. He also received the 2024 Emerging Nurse Researcher/Scholar Award for the Latin and South American Region from the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
“Cizik School of Nursing is a national nursing science leader in the field of HIV prevention,” Fernández-Sánchez said. “As an early-stage researcher, UTHealth Houston provides invaluable support, mentorship, and access to resources such as the NIH-funded HIV Implementation Science Hub and the Texas Development Center for AIDS Research. I am honored to represent Cizik School of Nursing at this summit addressing the largely invisible HIV crisis in Hispanic/Latino communities.”
