- Research Team: Diane Santa Maria, DrPH, MSN, RN, ACRN, PHNA-BC, FSAHM, FAAN & Nikhil Padhye, PhD (Cizik School of Nursing); Adeline Nyamathi, ANP, PhD, FAAN (University of California Irvine); Marguerita Lightfoot, PhD (University of California San Francisco); Mary Paul, MD (Baylor College of Medicine); Yasmeen Quadri, MD (Healthcare for the Homeless Program of Harris County).
- Funding sponsor: National Institute of Nursing Research
- Overview: The purpose of this randomized wait-list control trial was to test the efficacy of a nurse case management HIV prevention intervention (called CAYA [Come As You Are]) compared to usual care among youth experiencing homelessness aged 16-25 years old. The intervention incorporates motivational interviewing strategies combined with nurse case management and a smartphone-based daily diary and goal feature to develop and monitor participant-driven HIV prevention behavioral goals.
- Budget: $3,085,854
- Project period: Jan. 9, 2019 - May 31, 2024
CAYA supplement studies:
Come As You Are (CAYA) Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence study
- Overview: This study aims to enrich the scientific understanding of PrEP adherence and barriers and access to HIV prevention health services among sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth experiencing homelessness (YEH). Recruitment of this hard-to-reach, understudied population of high-risk youth provides an exceptional opportunity to examine engagement of SGM homeless youth in PrEP adherence measurement, qualitatively assess barriers and facilitators to access to and engagement in HIV prevention and care, and assess the role of stress on risk behaviors among SGM YEH.
Assessment of COVID-19 antibodies and transmission reduction strategies among Youth Experiencing Homelessness
- Overview: Participants for this supplement (YEH 16-25 years old) are recruited from sites already participating in the parent CAYA To meet the additional aims of this supplement, measures related to knowledge of and adherence to COVID-19 transmission reduction strategies (i.e. hand washing, masking, social distancing, stay-at home orders) were added to existing measures for mental health symptoms (i.e. stress, distress, anxiety), behavioral risks (i.e. condomless sex, trade sex, drug use), and determinants of health (i.e. housing). Additionally, COVID-19 antibody is conducted testing.
