Co-curricular Elective

The Rehabilitation Nursing Elective at Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston gives undergraduate students an unmatched opportunity to learn about the interprofessional practice of rehabilitation care, including nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other fields that help patients heal and adapt to a new life following traumatic injuries, strokes, spinal cord injuries, or other life-altering injuries and illnesses.

The curriculum was developed in partnership with TIRR Memorial Hermann, where the two-credit-hour course is taught. This hybrid course is offered in the Spring and Fall semesters. Top students in the accelerated Pacesetter BSN program can take the course as an elective after successful completion of the fundamental nursing courses, and they receive a stipend from the hospital to cover the cost.

Dedicated Educational Unit

In addition, 16 students per semester complete the clinical hours required as part of the standard BSN curriculum at TIRR Memorial Hermann. The hospital has established a dedicated educational unit, where students and instructors work full shifts and become familiar with the rehab environment.
