New advanced course for experienced nurse leaders Five monthly sessions for honing advanced skills
Experienced nurse leaders can further develop their skills with the new Advancing Transformational Nursing Leadership course offered by the Debbie Adams Leadership Academy at Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston.
“Our latest offering provides a growth opportunity for nurse leaders to learn from subject-matter experts about health informatics, advocacy/health policy, strategic planning, and other advanced leadership topics,” said Debbie Cline, DNP, RN, CNL, OCN, NEA-BC, director of the academy.
Participants will meet once a month for five months. The initial and final six-hour classes will be in person at Cizik School of Nursing, with three four-hour live, virtual classes in between. Topics include communication skills, emotional intelligence, interprofessional collaboration, data science, advocacy, and more.
“Participants in our two-day Foundations in Nursing Leadership course, which we launched in 2025, have told us how much it has helped build their confidence,” Cline said. “Our new course takes a deeper dive into healthcare, business, and personnel management concepts for nurses who have already have some leadership experience under their belts.”
The first Advancing Transformational Nursing Leadership series will be offered Sept. 17, 2027, through Jan. 13, 2028.
Applicants must have three years of formal leadership experience and must provide a curriculum vitae, letter of reference, employer letter of commitment, and personal statement. Completed applications are due by April 30, 2027.
The course costs $3,000, and continuing nursing professional development contact hours will be provided.*

The Debbie Adams Leadership Academy was established thanks to a generous gift from Deborah Garrett “Debbie” Adams, a 1984 graduate of Cizik School of Nursing. Adams served as an emergency department nurse for 14 years before transitioning into a business career.
